Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing quality. We live in an area with a lot of wild animals and often they get into the garbage or even cause other kinds of damage. Finally, I can keep alerted of the cameras pick up any movement. The best part is that I can be sent a real time alert, that also has built in spotlights and scare off the critters. The quality is smashing, clear picture and such a huge convenience to the house. I was even fortunate enough to catch someone trying to steal a package off my porch. They saw the cameras and put the package back on the porch, it was awesome! I highly recommend this for anyone needing a little extra security. I plan on buying this for my dad for Christmas.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from much harder to use than described I bought this after a long discussion with the Night Owl salesperson. I was supposed to be able to fully access the system via my smart phone, view events , and change settings. The instructions that came with the device strongly recommend connecting the dvr to the internet, and not a tv monitor. It installs very easily and the blue tooth set up was very easy. Howver, after 3 days, two hours spent with tech support, the dvr is recording but the events are not showing on my phone, nor on the monitor after I went through the hassle of moving one of my tv's down to the dvr. Nania my first tech contact was helpful, Jose was not and apparently not familiar with the BTD281 system. I would not recommend this system to anyone who is not a really savy tech person. I am going to have to try again tomorrow.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Video, App needs work These were an upgrade to an older Night Owl System so installation was a breeze as basically I just changed the cameras and the DVR. The video is nice and the ability to do human vs vehicle vs face detection is very helpful at cutting down false alerts that you used to get from the "pixel change" motion alerts of the older systems. My biggest gripe with this product is the app. It's slow to load, and some of the features for iOS don't work. -For example the do not disturb function is hit or miss as I set a time only to fin out that it does not work. -There is no snooze function for motion, so you have to turn off notifications if you are going to be in an area outside for a while, be prepared to be constantly bombarded with notifications. -The sound warnings, while effective are all or nothing. They constantly go off when motion is around and repeat the same phrase over and over. Would be nice to have a chirp option that let's someone know there are cameras but does not constantly shout out Smile you are are being recorded. -It would also be nice if there was greater integration into the smart home universe. For example, IFTTT integration would be amazing such that you could trigger lights to come on inside the home if a human is detected, etc. None of that is possible currently.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Initial thoughts Once the unit arrived, I changed out my existing cameras (unit not compatible with previous Night Owl AHD-10 unit) and tried to download the Night Owl Connect app. The app indicated that it was not available for my phone). I preceded to set up the unit manually with no major problems. The pictures are clear but there are several problems that I wish the Night Owl rep would have told me before I purchased it. 1. The unit is only compatible with a 1080p or 4k tv (or monitor). This required me to purchase a new tv to be able to set up the unit. Additional cost incurred - $240 2. The Night Owl connect app will not work with an Android Version earlier than 8.0. I'm going to have to purchase a new phone as my existing phone cannot be upgrade to Android 8.0. Still pricing new phone but expect an additional cost of $200-$400. 3. Remote viewing on my computer can only be set up with the Connect app. 4. No software is available to set up remote viewing on a computer. While I would recommend this unit to a friend, I would also tell them about the issues listed above.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Peace of Mind Received this video surveillance system expecting a complicated setup but that's not the case. Installation instructions were simple and clear. It is pretty much plug and play. Download the app and set it up and you are good to go. The 1TB hard drive will store plenty of footage. There are 4 additional ports to expand to 8 cameras if you need. The 60 ft camera cables allowed us to place them exactly where we needed them with some to spare. For this price I can't find any reason to not get the system. Totally worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this security This system was pretty easy to install, if you have DIY experience. The recordings are very clear. It is easy to navigate the app and check on things while away. The hard drive has alot of storage space which is an added bonus. The cameras are holding up well in the hot/cold/rain etc. I love the motion activated spotlights for when I come home after dark! I do not have to remember to turn lights on before I leave! There are no monthly fees with this system, and your hard drive stores recordings. One time fee to purchase. You can buy more cameras and expand up to 12 cameras as well if you need more. Must have system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Viewing Quality We've had this system for almost a month. It replaces another system. This one is amazing. The clarity in the viewing is the best we've had in over 5 years. I'm able to see perfectly at night. We also enjoy the added benefit of security when we're away. It is expandable to accommodate more cameras. It can store up to 2TB. That will last us forever. The app is so simple to use. Since it is wired, we had it professionally installed, and it took only a couple of hours. We compared quite a few before choosing this one. Best part is, there's no monthly fees. We've already purchased the door cam, which we will be able to connect with our system and view them all on the app.

It is easy to adjust settings to control notifications from your phone. It includes the necessary cables and hardware to install the cameras.

Since this DVR-BTD8-8 is hybrid, can it handle 8 BNC wired and 4 IP (wireless) cameras, does that mean the unit can record up to 12 channels of cameras? Also are IP cameras and WiFi wireless cameras that each have unique IP addresses compatible DVR-BTD?

Can we get live view on smartphones or tablet?

Remote viewing means that you can view your Night Owl device from the convenience of a Smart Device (Smartphone or Tablet) or Computer (PC or Mac). To remotely view your product, you will need to have your Night Owl device connected to the Internet and download the Night Owl Protect App. If you do not have Internet capability or do not wish to remotely view your system, you can locally view it on a TV or monitor. Most Night Owl devices can be connected to your TV or monitor using an HDMI cable. Keep in mind, most of our products require your TV or monitor to be a minimum of 1080p resolution to function. Does the alert "smile you are on camera" every time it detects motion or is there a setting where you can set that you are away to have that alert come on or can you turn off that alert

Good question. There is a setting in the DVR where you can set one or more cameras to automatically sound the alert when motion is detected.
