Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Video, App needs work These were an upgrade to an older Night Owl System so installation was a breeze as basically I just changed the cameras and the DVR. The video is nice and the ability to do human vs vehicle vs face detection is very helpful at cutting down false alerts that you used to get from the "pixel change" motion alerts of the older systems. My biggest gripe with this product is the app. It's slow to load, and some of the features for iOS don't work. -For example the do not disturb function is hit or miss as I set a time only to fin out that it does not work. -There is no snooze function for motion, so you have to turn off notifications if you are going to be in an area outside for a while, be prepared to be constantly bombarded with notifications. -The sound warnings, while effective are all or nothing. They constantly go off when motion is around and repeat the same phrase over and over. Would be nice to have a chirp option that let's someone know there are cameras but does not constantly shout out Smile you are are being recorded. -It would also be nice if there was greater integration into the smart home universe. For example, IFTTT integration would be amazing such that you could trigger lights to come on inside the home if a human is detected, etc. None of that is possible currently.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Initial thoughts Once the unit arrived, I changed out my existing cameras (unit not compatible with previous Night Owl AHD-10 unit) and tried to download the Night Owl Connect app. The app indicated that it was not available for my phone). I preceded to set up the unit manually with no major problems. The pictures are clear but there are several problems that I wish the Night Owl rep would have told me before I purchased it. 1. The unit is only compatible with a 1080p or 4k tv (or monitor). This required me to purchase a new tv to be able to set up the unit. Additional cost incurred - $240 2. The Night Owl connect app will not work with an Android Version earlier than 8.0. I'm going to have to purchase a new phone as my existing phone cannot be upgrade to Android 8.0. Still pricing new phone but expect an additional cost of $200-$400. 3. Remote viewing on my computer can only be set up with the Connect app. 4. No software is available to set up remote viewing on a computer. While I would recommend this unit to a friend, I would also tell them about the issues listed above.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the price. Turned out I didn't need it! This is my 4th Night Owl system. Each generation gets easier to set-up. I upgraded to add doorbells thinking I would need a wi-fi recorder. Thought I would like the spotlight cameras, but the spotlight comes on a lot without any motion or objects in view, tried every setting available but still on off randomly. Not a lot of adjustability (like sensitivity) as before. It is geared to use the phone app, some settings are not available on the recorder display. I have a 50" TV on my home office wall displaying 8 cameras and wanted to add doorbells and get push notifications when someone rings the doorbell, I bought 2 doorbell cameras but when I add them to the recorder in the app the notification option for pressing the door bell goes away. Also get constant false notifications when added to the recorder, turned off vehicle and motion, left on human/ face detection but still got constant false notifications. Uninstalled them from the recorder and just added them to the app only with just notify if the doorbell is pushed and don't get any false notifications. Haven't tested the other settings installed this way but I have wired cameras covering the area already, just wanted notifications when someone rings my doorbells. If I knew this I could have just installed the doorbells and kept my old system. For most people or first time buyers, this system would be easier to self install and set-up than previous recorders, phone app is adequate and younger would probably prefer the phone app, but for me I miss the more detailed adjustments.

what is the lens angle on the cameras, and can the light on cameras be disabled if desired?

These cameras have an 80 degree field of view. Yes, the spotlight can be disabled for one or more cameras if desired. This can be done at the DVR/NVR level or remotely via the App. This may come in handy for cameras that are installed inside the home, or during special events where you anticipate a lot of camera activity. Since this DVR-BTD8-8 is hybrid, can it handle 8 BNC wired and 4 IP (wireless) cameras, does that mean the unit can record up to 12 channels of cameras? Also are IP cameras and WiFi wireless cameras that each have unique IP addresses compatible DVR-BTD?

Yes, you are correct. It can hold up to 8 wired BNC and 4 Wi-Fi IP devices. The DVR works with our AC Powered Wi-Fi IP Cameras (WNIP2 and WNIP8 Series) and our Smart Video Doorbell (DB-WNIP2 Series). Can we get live view on smartphones or tablet?

Remote viewing means that you can view your Night Owl device from the convenience of a Smart Device (Smartphone or Tablet) or Computer (PC or Mac). To remotely view your product, you will need to have your Night Owl device connected to the Internet and download the Night Owl Protect App. If you do not have Internet capability or do not wish to remotely view your system, you can locally view it on a TV or monitor. Most Night Owl devices can be connected to your TV or monitor using an HDMI cable. Keep in mind, most of our products require your TV or monitor to be a minimum of 1080p resolution to function. What is the maximum size hard drive that can be added to this?

Your DVR can hold up to an 8TB Hard Drive. Our DVR/NVRs are compatible with internal SATA HDD's, 2.5" or 3.5". The HDD should have a minimum of 7200 RPM. We are not able to guarantee compatibility with external hard drives at this time. Thank you for choosing Night Owl!

Can you record video directly to your phone or do you need the DVR unit

The recordings with our systems are stored to a hard drive. You can then view them from your smartphone or tablet. Additionally, you can download the recordings directly to your smartphone or tablet and share them via text or email. Thank you for choosing Night Owl!

The description mentions that you can add up to 4 wireless cameras. Does that mean you can use the 4 wired cameras plus purchase 4 wireless cameras all to be used on the same unit?

I prefer to use a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to set up a system. Regarding the "Bluetooth 8 Channel 4K DVR 1 TB HDD and 4 x 4K Light Cameras with Audio - BTD8 Series" I see it has HDMI output. Does it also have USB input for a keyboard and mouse?
