Product Reviews & Questions and Answers

XHD502-88P is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality I recently bought this package and I'd say it is a quality purchase for what you get. If you want to monitor your cameras through your phone/tablet - it's very easy and the picture quality (what sold me) is great. The motion detecting is a plus since you can get notifications on your phone any time someone moves in a certain area (you can choose the area to which the motion detecting occurs). Worth the investment imo

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great system I've owned the unit for 2 month now and am very impressed with the performance and customer service. Installation is a breeze with the Start up Wizard, and the technical support is fantastic. The IR lights could be better and in some cases need some additional IR lighting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Picture, Questionable DVR, OK Service After installing my eight camera system around the exterior perimeter of my home, I'm happy with the camera picture. Very crisp during the day, pretty good at night (the night time LED illuminators are focused at the center of the camera sight picture, so objects in the perimeter are pretty dark). I have the DVR connected HDMI to my living room TV; my family enjoys looking at the "live streaming", and motion activated recordings from throughout the day. My biggest concern is channel 2 is glitching out, and after some basic troubleshooting, it seems the DVR circuit board or some interior electronic is shorted. Basically my channel 2 has horizontal lines through it and the picture flashes through all 8 camera channels within 1 second and then repeats. Definitely a hardware issue. Viewing on your iPhone is fine, but freezes up if you don't have perfect WIFI signal, even on "standard" definition (you can select HD or SD viewing). Still, it's pretty good. I haven't tried it out around town without WIFI. Customer service pre-order was less then desired. The gentlemen helping me seemed distracted and gave very vague answers to some pretty simple questions. Overall, i'm happy with the system. Hopefully Night Owl helps me figure out the channel 2 glitch problem, or sends me a replacement DVR. Regardless, still paints a big QUESTION MARK in my mind about the quality of the hardware. Of course, any manufacture is going to have lemons. Let's just hope this is one of those times.

If the balun is used to extend the run, can it go through a router or does it have to be connected directly from camera to dvr?

Asked by: Nicknameagain
The video balun is used to allow the cameras to connect to the DVR using Ethernet cabling. It cannot be connected directly to your router/modem. Thanks for choosing Night Owl!

What is the maximum cable run length for this? Will it work at 150 feet?

Asked by: Nicknameagain
Typically, the max run distance for cabling with our DVRs is 180 ft. However, when going beyond 60 ft., we recommend you purchase a separate camera power adapter for that camera to power it locally to ensure there are no power consumption issues. Also, you can purchase one of our video baluns and use a single Ethernet cable run to avoid video degradation issues. Please see the below links for options. 100 Ft. Cable Extension http://nightowlsp.com/products/cables-accessories/cables/cab-ul2-100vp.html Camera Power Adapter http://nightowlsp.com/products/cables-accessories/spare-parts/sp-cam-1500pa.html Video Balun http://nightowlsp.com/products/cables-accessories/accessories/a-vb-poe-bnc.html

Hi compatible with my AHD camera with no changing wire cable?thx.

Asked by: Night owl rocks
Yes, you can view your AHD camera on this DVR with the existing cabling. However, you will not be able to view the 5MP cameras using the old cabling. You will have to use the included UL2 listed cable with the 5MP cameras. Thanks for choosing Night Owl!

I wish to enhance the night vision by adding some additional infrared lighting. What is the wavelength of infrared these cameras operate on? Ex. 850nm.

Asked by: Warren Dallas
We apologize for the delay, but we've reached out to our Engineering team for further clarification regarding this issue. This question will be updated when a final answer is determined. We appreciate your patience and thank you for being a Night Owl customer.

Does this system record in a loop?

Asked by: Jozy
This system has three main recording options: motion record (records every time the camera detects heat + motion), 24/7 record (records all day everyday- which will eat through available hard drive space quickly) and scheduled record (where you can set the DVR to record on a schedule). When the HDD (hard drive) becomes full, it will begin overwriting old footage by default. Thanks for choosing Night Owl!
