If you want to monitor your cameras through your phone/tablet - it's very easy and the picture quality (what sold me) is great. The motion detecting is a plus since you can get notifications on your phone any time someone moves in a certain area (you can choose the area to which the motion detecting occurs). Worth the investment imo

Installation is a breeze with the Start up Wizard, and the technical support is fantastic. The IR lights could be better and in some cases need some additional IR lighting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Picture, Questionable DVR, OK Service After installing my eight camera system around the exterior perimeter of my home, I'm happy with the camera picture. Very crisp during the day, pretty good at night (the night time LED illuminators are focused at the center of the camera sight picture, so objects in the perimeter are pretty dark). I have the DVR connected HDMI to my living room TV; my family enjoys looking at the "live streaming", and motion activated recordings from throughout the day. My biggest concern is channel 2 is glitching out, and after some basic troubleshooting, it seems the DVR circuit board or some interior electronic is shorted. Basically my channel 2 has horizontal lines through it and the picture flashes through all 8 camera channels within 1 second and then repeats. Definitely a hardware issue. Viewing on your iPhone is fine, but freezes up if you don't have perfect WIFI signal, even on "standard" definition (you can select HD or SD viewing). Still, it's pretty good. I haven't tried it out around town without WIFI. Customer service pre-order was less then desired. The gentlemen helping me seemed distracted and gave very vague answers to some pretty simple questions. Overall, i'm happy with the system. Hopefully Night Owl helps me figure out the channel 2 glitch problem, or sends me a replacement DVR. Regardless, still paints a big QUESTION MARK in my mind about the quality of the hardware. Of course, any manufacture is going to have lemons. Let's just hope this is one of those times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with purchase-yet hoping for improvement We have our cameras up and running! Installation was easy but time consuming only because of running the cables which is to be expected. Regarding the cables, we have a 3000 sq ft split level home and we thought that once we started the installation that we would find that we would need to order some longer cables for a couple of the camera placements but we didn’t, we wired them all without extra cable purchases. We had to really think ahead and get creative with camera placement with still being able to conceal the wires, but it worked. Video and picture quality are great both at close distances and far distances. We have various setups from right at the front door, to our back deck mountain view. I will attach a pic of each distance so you can see the difference. My only real complaint is the software and app. I am not a novice computer user or app user, and I find both very frustrating. It has taken a lot of time playing around with them to get them to do what I want them to do whether it is take a still pic or even just playback motion detected video. When using the software you have to keep putting your username and password in every time you select playback even if you had just entered it a few minutes prior. I find myself spending way too much time trying to get the software and app to do what I would think would be simplistic options of what they would be purposed for. They are not user friendly by any means...and they are very frustrating to use. Please Night Owl, take the time and money to update and improve the software and app! I am hoping you have already started to do so!

I do like this unit, but there is some room for software improvement, especially evident when comparing this latest 5MP, 8 camera unit's software to the slightly earlier and nearly identical 3MP, 4 camera model (XHD30.. vs XHD50..). Why would I know this? - I initially installed and briefly used the 3MP model and decided to upgrade to 5MP and 8 cameras. As a result, I was able to find out after upgrading that the software with the nearly identical 3MP model appeared to be slightly better than this slightly newer and higher resolution 5MP model, which seems odd. For instance - 1) When setting up motion detection, the 3mp model shows you exactly where on the screen the motion is being detected as it is detected, making it easy to see how it is working, this 5MP newer model does not do that. 2) In 3MP model, I could pause the recording and select an area to zoom in to the video on the monitor, which is not possible in this "newer" and higher resolution model, where I cannot zoom on the newer and higher resolution model? So, while happy with this model, I upgraded to 5MP and while I did upgrade in resolution, I also feel like I also downgraded in actual functionality of the software. Other areas for them to consider improving: 3) The mobile app does not have the most recent playback, where I need to pull down to refresh the available recordings over and over to get to the latest ones and could not find a way to go back to older ones on the same day, if there were many. 4) The DVR unit does get quite warm and I am worried that unless sitting on an open area with lots of ventilation, I feel like it may end up frying itself due to overheating. (It is quiet!) 5) The DVR software appears to offer an option to "Synchronize Playback", but I can't enable this. The checkbox to enable will not accept a "check" 6) The DVR does have a place to upgrade the firmware of the cameras, but there is no information on the nightowl website or manual if this is really an option or not, nor even how to check the camera firmware. For clarity and to ensure there are no questions - I did ensure my firmware for was the most recent (DVR8-XHD50_20170905). Finally, all those opportunities to improve aside, I do like the unit. I have had it a month, and I am happy with the performance, recordings, quiet DVR, live viewing app, etc. It is my hope that because this is a brand new unit, much of these minor misses will be corrected in a future software and/or firmware update.

In the security system I have now, the cameras are wired using co-axial cable. Does this system's cameras use co-axial cable or CAT 5/6/7 cable?
